environmental access fee (eaf)

A portion of your ticket price goes directly towards preserving the unique environment you will enjoy on your Abel Tasman excursion. This includes the compulsory concession fees paid to the Department of Conservation as well as voluntary contributions to local organisations and projects to improve the environment, ecology and access to the national park.

For adults this fee is $5.00 for one-way water taxi fares, $10.00 per return water taxi fare, $4.00 for freedom kayak rentals and $10.00 for guided kayaking trips. The guided walking fees are $5.00 for one hour or less, $10.00 for half day-trips and $15.00 for a full-day. The fees are not applicable for children aged under 5 years and are charged at half the above rates for children aged 5-17 years. The EAF is not applicable for school children when on school trips or for volunteers doing conservation work in the Abel Tasman.

The Environmental & Access Fee (EAF) is made up of the following components:

  1. Foreshore crossing levies:
    a. Compulsory levy paid to the Department of Conservation (DOC) for each person crossing the foreshore within the Abel Tasman National Park
    b. Compulsory levy paid to the Kaiteriteri Domain Board for each person crossing the Kaiteriteri foreshore or the voluntary levy paid to the Mārahau Environmental Trust for each person crossing the Mārahau foreshore.
  2. Guiding Fees:
    a. Compulsory levy paid to the Department of Conservation for water based guiding when doing a guided kayak trip in the Abel Tasman National Park.
    b. Compulsory levy paid to the Department of Conservation for guided walking when doing a guided walk in the Abel Tasman National Park
  3. Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust Contribution: Our voluntary contribution to the local environmental trust we helped to establish in 2007.
  4. Zero Carbon Certified Credits: We offset our carbon footprint through the purchase of carbon credits to deliver climate resilience, waterway protection, erosion control, biodiversity, conservation and community economic development.
  5. Administration costs: Expenses incurred by our business in the management and administration of the EAF.
